Miami Commit Redmond Savage selected in NHL Draft

Miami hockey commit Redmond (Red) Savage was selected 121st overall by the Detroit Red Wings in Saturday’s National Hockey League (NHL) Draft.

Savage is an 18-year-old center who spent the last two seasons in the United States National Team Developmental Program (USNTDP). He recorded 66 points in 72 games for the USNTDP in 2020-21. He was also the captain of the United States national team at the under-18 World Junior Classic in 2021.

Detroit is coached by former Miami assistant coach Jeff Blashill.

Despite being drafted, Savage will play at least one season for Miami.

Savage’s Brother, Ryan, already plays hockey for Miami — the rising junior has recorded nine goals and 19 points in 43 career games for the RedHawks. Red’s father Brian also played hockey for Miami between 1990 and 1993. Brian recorded 109 points in 106 career games for the ‘Hawks and was an alternate captain for his final two seasons.
