The Miami men’s track and field team held their own against tough competition at this year’s NCAA indoor national championships.

The RedHawks obtained top-ten finishes in two different events at the championship, held in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team kicked things off on Friday, placing eighth in the event with a time of 9:35.17, the team’s best time of the season.

The four-runner DMR team includes junior Luke Finnegan, sophomore Andrew Schroff, and senior twins Sean and Christopher Torpy.

On Saturday, junior Finley McLear was impressive in the 800m dash. McLear finished second in the race, losing to Oregon junior Charlie Hunter by only a tenth of a second. McLear’s time was 1:45.91, his personal best.

McLear, an England native, has competed internationally, winning a bronze medal at the European U20 Championships in 2019.

In both races, the ’Hawks were competing with marquee programs. Of the 12 teams in the DMR, Miami was the only squad who isn’t a member of a Power Five conference.

In McLear’s race, he was one of two runners not attending a Power Five school.

McLear and the DMR team, the only competitors at the meet for Miami, scored nine total points. The RedHawks finished 22nd out of 83 teams, one of the highest finishes for a mid-major school at the event.
