Miami baseball will finally play a home series this weekend against Toledo

The RedHawks may have lost two out of the three games last weekend, but they secured a big win as well. 

Miami was able to win its first game, 9-0, but fell to the Tigers for the rest of the series. 

The ’Hawks lost on Sunday, 5-2, and lost again, 4-2, in Sunday’s series closer.

Miami does the shutting out

The RedHawks shut the Tigers out on Friday evening and won the game, 9-0.

Miami took an early lead in the first inning by scoring two runs. Center fielder Benji Brokemond was hit by a pitch, and left fielder Dalton Back hit an RBI double. 

The RedHawks were able to bring in the second run from a couple of sacrifice flies from second baseman Will Vogelgesang and right fielder Nate Stone.

The RedHawks extended their lead, 5-0, in the second inning. Catcher Nate Stolze walked, shortstop Tyler Wardwell singled and first baseman Michael Morissette hit an RBI single. Brokemond walked and Back hit a two-RBI double.

In four innings throughout the remainder of the game, Miami scored four more runs. In the third inning, Stone, Stolze, Wardwell and third baseman Brian Zapp walked, bringing in a run. 

In the sixth inning, Zapp walked on four pitches, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brokemond hit a sac fly to extend the RedHawks’ lead to 7-0. 

In the seventh inning, Vogelgesang hit a solo homer, and in the ninth inning, Vogelgesang doubled and substitute designated hitter Nick Clark hit an RBI double.

The RedHawks avoid a shutout

Miami wasn’t able to secure a win in Saturday’s game. 

The Tigers got the early lead this time,  scoring two runs in the second inning with a walk, a hit by pitch and a two-RBI single. 

Memphis scored two more runs with a hit by pitch, single and a two-run double in the third inning. The Tigers extended their lead by another run in the fourth inning with two doubles.

The RedHawks weren’t shut out, though. 

In the third inning, Brokemond and Back were both hit by pitches and Vogelgesang singled to get one run on the scoreboard for Miami. And in the eighth inning, Back hit a solo homer to start the inning.

Miami loses its series finale within two runs

After three scoreless innings on Sunday, Memphis took the lead, 2-0, with a single, a walk, an advancement on a wild pitch and a two-RBI double. 

In the fifth inning, Zapp answered with a solo home run. 

The Tigers fought back in the sixth inning with a solo bomb of their own. In the seventh inning, Memphis hit a couple of singles, stole a base and grounded out to extend its lead to 4-1. 

The RedHawks were able to get one more run in the ninth inning. 

Stone doubled and advanced to third base on an error by Memphis’ right fielder. Wardwell then grounded out to make the final score 4-2. 

Miami will take on the University of Toledo this weekend, as it plays at home for the first time this season. The four-game series against the Rockets starts at 5 p.m. Friday.
