During my first semester as a first year there are some things I learned: have fun, be inspired and reuse. What I mean by those phrases is that there has to be a balance, not just in school and social life. It’s by being resourceful with what you have and how you can use it to your advantage. These four DIYs are my absolute favorite ones that help the environment as well as making your dorm look fabulous. 1. Vision boardThis DIY is by far my favorite creations that I have ever done. You can combine all your favorite pictures with newspaper articles, magazine cut outs, as well as old tags from clothes. For mine I combine all of my favorite interests, quotes and power mantras on my wall. This diy makes you reuse your old magazines/newspapers, and when you are done with the scraps of the old articles, you can recycle them so they can be disposed in a beneficial way. 2. Eco-friendly string lightsThis DIY is also one of my favorites. You can do this by purchasing compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs to save energy and be energy efficient. It also will accent the room well. 3. Using washi tapeFor this DIY, you can make this on your wall with various designs, and it is easy to dispose when you are done. For example, first semester I used washi tape with some of my old polaroids and outlined them with some hearts and a city landscape. This DIY not only makes your dorm room look unique, but this will also save you money, it is tree free and made out of highly renewable resources. It is a lot better than using duct tape because duct tape doesn't biodegrade.4. Party wall decorFor this diy, you can make the party wall streamers using scraps of old newspaper and making them into flowers so it can accent the room while saving paper!Photos by Mia Lee and Pixabay.
