On Friday, it was announced that Miami would not be renewing the contract of men's head basketball coach John Cooper and it would be relieving women's head basketball coach Cleve Wright. Both changes were effective immediately.
The decision was announced by Miami University's athletic director David Sayler, who said, "With the support of Miami's board of trustees and the president, we are making a commitment to Miami basketball. For years Miami basketball was the preeminent leader of the Mid-American Conference and we plan to take all necessary steps to make that happen once more."
The men's basketball team went 59-100 during Cooper's time as coach and was 29-59 in MAC play. During his five seasons as head coach, the team did not win more than 13 games in a season. Most recently, the RedHawks finished 11-21 and lost in the first round of the MAC tournament.
Women's basketball went 35-87 during Cleve's four-year tenure at Miami and 16-56 in the MAC. This past year, the Lady RedHawks also went 11-21 for the season and lost in the first round of MAC tournament play. Miami's 11 wins this year was the most during Cleve's time at Miami.
The programs have won a combined 25 regular season championships and have advanced to the NCAA Tournament 18 times, in the past.
The athletic department is conducting a national search to fill the positions.
