Drunk male demands alcohol sobriety test
Nov. 16, around 9:00 p.m., an Oxford Police Officer responded to the area of 6200 Contreras Road concerning a call about an individual who jumped a fence into the Oxford Country Club and entered the swimming pool area. The suspect was described as a white college male wearing a brown sweater and only one shoe. When the officer arrived, the subject described was standing in the middle of the roadway in the 6400 block of Contreras Road. A group of mailboxes had been recently damaged; some were lying in the roadway. When the officer asked the suspect his name, he replied Steven, according to OPD. While speaking with the suspect the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech and mannerisms indicative of someone who was intoxicated, according to OPD. The suspect was placed under arrest and once handcuffed the officer found his driver's license, which matched his Miami University Student ID that stated his name was Kyle Smith, according to OPD. When asked again, Smith kept replying his name was Steven and saying his birth date was December 23, 2012. A Miami University Junior, Smith began yelling at the officers demanding a test for alcohol. He was placed in the cruiser and taken back to the Oxford Police Station. Seven mailboxes had been reported damaged. Once at the station, the suspect said his name was Kyle Smith and resided in McFarland Hall. Smith was charged with seven counts of criminal mischief, criminal trespassing and sales to and use by underage persons, according to OPD. Smith was taken to the Butler Country Jail.
Intoxicated driver hits pedestrian in the leg, strikes a parked car
Nov. 17 at 3 a.m., Oxford Police were dispatched to a possibly intoxicated driver who struck a parked car and hit a pedestrian in the leg in the 100 block of South Main Street. The pedestrian who was hit called the police and said the car had run a stop sign at the corner of Main Street and Spring Street and was headed towards Chestnut Street. An OPD officer followed the vehicle onto Chestnut Street. When the officer activated his overhead lights, the vehicle stopped and attempted to pull over but ran the car up the right side of the curb on the grass. The officer told the suspect about the complaint they received about her driving and she said she did not think she struck another car. The officer smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath and her speech was slurred. The caller to OPD said the suspect was parked on South Main Street, but the suspect told the officer she thought she was parked on South Poplar Street. The suspect told the officer she knew she should not be driving but missed the last bus to Level 27 apartments so she decided to drive home. The suspect was identified as Miami University Senior Tasha Elkins, according to OPD. Elkins refused a breath sample and failed the field sobriety test, according to OPD. She was arrested and taken to the OPD. Elkins was placed under driving suspension and issued citation for an OVI, according to OPD. She was later released to a friend.
