Tech Tip | Trojan virus infecting some Mac computers

Randy Hollowell, IT Services

Over the past week a virus referred to as "Flashback" or "Flashfake" has infected over 600,000 Mac computers.  This virus has spread very quickly and allows hackers to gain remote access to the infected computer.  An early version of the virus came from a pop-up window that asked users to install a fake version of Adobe Flash.  A newer version uses a security bug in Java to infect the computer.  Once hackers access the computer they are able to steal personal and financial data.

If you think your computer may be infected, or you just want to check, visit FLASHBACKCHECK.com and follow the 3-step instructions to confirm an infection.

If you find your computer is infected, download the removal tool from http://download.cnet.com/Flashback-Removal-Tool/3000-2239_4-75700492.html?tag=mncol;txt

The Information Security Office recommends that students, faculty and staff treat unsolicited email and spam with a high degree of skepticism.  Be especially careful of any email that requires you to enter your password or username.  IT Services will never ask for your password via email, and neither will any legitimate business.
