As finals week approaches, back up data and remember Support Desk hours

Back up your files

Everyone knows the story of the student who lost a big project because his or her computer crashed right before it was due. Help prevent that person from being you by backing up your data.

Miami does not provide an automated backup and recovery solution for student computers; however, there are several options you can consider for data backup:

·       An external hard drive - There are many different manufacturers and sizes of hard drives.  The Miami Bookstore computer staff can help you select the model that is right for you.

·       MyFiles, also known as netDisk, provides 1GB of free, private, secure and frequently backed up storage and web space. You can access MyFiles by clicking the netDisk link from the LaunchPad in myMiami.

·       A cloud-based service - some are free, and some have a cost associated with their use. Popular services include Dropbox, Carbonite, Apple's MobileMe, and Amazon Cloud Drive.

And just in case what could go wrong does go wrong, students should be aware of IT Services' Support Desk hours. If your computer crashes, you lose your work in Niihka, or you have problems connecting to wireless before your big exam, then you can contact the IT Services Support Desk through email , chat, phone or by visiting the IT Service Center in 317 Hughes Hall, West Wing.
