Mobile health unit will provide needed service

Miami University is piloting a new national demonstration project to bring health issues to campus in a more interactive way. The project will raise awareness on the importance of physical, intellectual, social, emotional, environmental and spiritual health by creating a mobile health unit in an RV. The vehicle would "roll" onto college campuses to generate discussion and awareness. Students can work with trained students about various topics and gain a basic knowledge of medical practices. The two-year project was planned and organized by 18 undergraduate students enrolled in a capstone class and is funded by the Ford Foundation.

The editorial board of The Miami Student thinks the unit will be more approachable than conventional ways of seeking help for certain sensitive health issues, such as eating disorders, substance abuse problems and sexual health. These issues are important to every college student but can also be difficult to talk about and find a comfortable place to obtain information. Students who may not want to make appointments to talk about these issues may feel comfortable walking into the unit as they pass.

The mobility of the unit will provide the branch campuses with a needed resource. Oxford has a health center that provides some similar services as the mobile unit, but the branch campuses have no substitute.

Oxford campus is filled with flyers to promote healthy habits and there is a counseling center available for students in need, but this unit will provide the branch campuses with essential services to their well-being as college students and young adults.

This board suggests the project re-examines the flow of students to the unit at the end of first semester to appropriately allocate their resources to the busiest times. If students aren't using the center during late weekend nights the project can look at the best way to use its resources during that time or if it is a time of greater need than more students can be available to help.
