Letter to the Editor | Article Response: Student suicides call community to action

Joan Burger, Director of Business Development, St. Aloysius Community Counseling and Crisis Center, jburger@stalsorphanage.org

I represent the Butler County Crisis Hotline that supports the community of Oxford, the students that attend Miami University and Butler County residents. After reading the article by Emily Crane, "Student Suicides call community to action," the Crisis Consultants at the Crisis Hotline were personally moved as well as compelled to spread the word of the resources that are offered right here in Oxford.

It is vitally important that we educate and provide all the resources available, specifically for focusing on suicide prevention. We are 150 percent in support and partner with Kip Alishio and his team at the MU Student Counseling Center and all their tremendous efforts to reach out to students.

If in doubt, call 9-1-1.  But Butler County has their own suicide prevention hotline that is in the midst of marketing a new toll free number: 1.844.4CRISIS or 1.844.427.4747.  We need your help in getting the message out. Our fully trained Crisis Consultants provide 24/7 crisis intervention and suicide prevention services, free and confidential. We save lives. We are a resource. We support Miami University and the community. We are a part of the community. Reporting powerful articles like this is imperative, but please offer all the resources available.  There is a place of help for everyone out there, they just need to know where to go and what to do. We want to help.

Thank you.
