Open Positions

Food Editor

Assign, edit and post stories for the Miami Student’s Food section. The Food section, which TMS introduced in January 2017, is a special section of the newspaper that runs once a month in print. The Food Editor is the primary staff member responsible for that page and is also expected to assign and edit a handful of online-only Food stories in between printed sections.

The section features recipes, Uptown restaurant news and review and other food-related features. We’re seeking someone who loves writing and eating and the intersection of the two. Applicants do not have to be journalism majors, but writing/editing experience is preferred.

The Food Editor has full access to the TMS office in the Armstrong Student Center, and is expected to attend one meeting a week with the TMS staff. The Food Editor also must work during the production nights (Monday, 5 p.m.) when the Food section is being printed.

Science Editor

Assign, edit and post stories for the Miami Student’s Science section. The Science section, which TMS introduced in January 2017, is a special section of the newspaper that runs once a month in print. The section features environmental news, features on interesting research from MU students and staff and columns about science and the environment. We’re seeking someone who has a strong interest in science and writing, and preferably a student who has a science or environment -related major or minor.

The Science Editor has full access to the TMS office in the Armstrong Student Center, and is expected to attend one meeting a week with the TMS staff. The Science Editor also must work during the production nights (Monday, 5 p.m.) when the Science section is being printed.

Travel Editor

Assign, edit and post stories for the Miami Student’s Travel section. The Travel section, which TMS introduced in January 2017, is a special section of the newspaper that runs once a month in print. The Travel Editor is the primary staff member responsible for that page and is also expected to assign and edit a handful of online-only Travel stories in between printed sections.

The section features everything from Outside Oxford, a series about easy day trips close to Miami’s campus, to students’ tales from spring break stints in Iceland or study abroad adventures in Chile. Applicants do not have to be journalism majors, but writing/editing experience is preferred.

The Travel Editor has full access to the TMS office in the Armstrong Student Center, and is expected to attend one meeting a week with the TMS staff. The Travel Editor also must work during the production nights (Monday, 5 p.m.) when the Travel section is being printed.

As Miami University’s largest student publication, the Miami Student is always ready to welcome new writers to our staff. We have four main sections: News, Culture, Opinion and Sports. We also have four special sections: Entertainment, Food, Science and Travel.
