Delta Tau Delta chapter suspended, under investigation for hazing

Miami University's chapter of the fraternity Delta Tau Delta has been summarily, or temporarily, suspended following reports of hazing.

University President Gregory Crawford announced the suspension this afternoon in an email to the Miami community.

"The contents of this report are brutal and deplorable, and have brought us to a tipping point on this campus," wrote Crawford.

Sophomore students living in the Delta Tau Delta house at 220 Tallawanda Road, across from North campus, are being relocated to residence halls, and a "decision about the long-term future" of the fraternity will be announced after the hazing investigation is complete, according to the email.

Crawford has asked administrators and staff from the Office of Student Life for "recommendations that can be implemented immediately across all fraternities and sororities," according to the email and information from Michele Sparks, vice president and chief communications and marketing officer for the university.

Those recommendations could replace or add on to fraternity life changes already slated for the fall 2019 semester, Sparks said in a phone call with The Student.

The changes for the upcoming fall semester were developed by a committee of administrators and student leaders and include live-in house directors, a shorter new-member period and an increased GPA requirement.

"At this point, anything is on the table," she said.
