Miami University Head Men's Basketball Coach Charlie Coles dodged the retirement question all season long, but after Miami's Mid-American Conference Tournament loss to the University of Toledo Monday night, he made it official.

Miami lost what would be Coles' final game by a final score of 60-53.

Coles announced his retirement after 16 seasons and a 266-226 record at Miami that included a run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1999.

Coles was in the final year of his contract with Miami and had battled health issues in recent years. Coles missed Miami's game against the University at Buffalo in February after being briefly hospitalized for a virus.

Coles, a player at Miami from 1963-1965, is 70 years old. He had previously coached at Central Michigan University.
