Brotherhood goes down swinging

It might have been dealt a 1-0 loss Saturday night, but the Miami University men's hockey team didn't take it sitting down. After a final 30-second flurry of offensive opportunities, junior forward Blake Coleman was the recipient of a low, sweeping check that sent both teams into a frenzy and resulted in a bench-clearing brawl.

The low scoring affair was low-key overall, with the lone goal coming from the University of Minnesota-Duluth's Kyle Osterberg in the opening minutes of the second period. While the RedHawk faithful might not have had much to cheer about for most of Senior Night, the post-game fight night brought the remaining fans to their feet, as Coleman, sophomore defenseman Chris Joyaux and several others wearing the Red and White exchanged blows with their opponents. Coleman and UMD junior defenseman both received 10-minute misconducts for their roles in the brawl.

The Brotherhood had a decent showing, despite being held scoreless.

"I thought our effort was pretty good tonight," head coach Enrico Blasi said. "We just couldn't execute.

When asked about scrum at buzzer, Blasi attributed it to boys being boys.

"When you battle all weekend that's going to happen," Blasi said. "Hopefully nothing comes out of it."

The Bulldogs completed the sweep with Saturday's win, but the fight that capped off these programs' third all-time meeting set the stage for a bitter, National Collegiate Hockey Conference rivalry.
